http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071208/ap_po/huckabee_aidsThis is a story relating to when Mike Huckabee unsucessfully ran for the U.S. Senate back in 1992. He was asked over 200 questions, of which this article highlights just a few.
Here's what I like about what he said back then. He said homosexuality "pose[s] a dangerous public health risk." Okay, I agree with him there. Also, "It is difficult to understand the public policy towards
AIDS. It is the first time in the history of civilization in which the carriers of a genuine plague have not been isolated from the general population, and in which this deadly disease for which there is no cure is being treated as a civil rights issue instead of the true health crisis it represents." The article states that Huckabee didn't like the fact that AIDS research has an "unfair share" of taxpayer money spent on it compared to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
Okay, I agree with him on those parts. Yet, here's what the article says about his position now.
A statement on his website posted last month said, "My administration will be the first to have an overarching strategy for dealing with HIV and AIDS here in the United States, with a partnership between the public and private sectors that will provide necessary financing and a realistic path toward our goals." And regarding the Lawrence vs. Texas case in 2003: He thinks it was the right decision.
So, here's a candidate that went from the right position to the wrong position. That's odd for a candidate. If you look at Mitt Romney, he went from being wrong to right, yet I'm still skeptical as to why.
We need someone who's consistent. Occasional policy changes are okay, but there has to be some real justification in the shift.
